TexPIRG Advocate Jeff Brooks |
Allow me to introduce myself: I’m Jeff Brooks, the new Public Interest Advocate at TexPIRG.
Let me tell you a bit about myself. I’m a lifelong Texan; I grown up in Dallas and went to school at Texas State University in San Marcos. There I received degrees in history and political science. I was also the opinions editor of the Daily University Star (a position once held by Lyndon Baines Johnson).
Following my university days, I worked at a middle-school, teaching social studies before getting involved in politics. Over the last few years, I have served as a staffer and policy consultant for several political campaigns in the Austin area.
I greatly enjoy my work at TexPIRG because it gives me the opportunity to make life better for people all over Texas.
I love Texas, and cherish its unique spirit and traditions of independence and populism. I believe it to be the greatest state in the Union, but I also believe that we can make it greater still.
The 2007 legislative session is an important one, and rest assured that TexPIRG will be in the thick of it, providing a loud and clear voice for the citizens of Texas, standing in clear contrast to the chorus of special-interest lobbyists.
We’re working to get bills passed on issues as diverse as homeowners’ rights, passenger rail, redistricting reform, energy efficiency, identity theft and payday loans. Which leads me to the point of his letter. Since we don’t accept corporate contributions, our campaigns are funded by small donations given by our supporters.
Without your help, TexPIRG would be unable to take the fight for consumer rights and good government into the halls of the Texas Capitol. Many of you have been extremely generous with your support, and I wanted to make sure my first word to you is “thanks.”
